The past couple of years changed the world of weddings immeasurably. From micro-ceremonies to dried flower bouquets, scenting your wedding and now long sleeve wedding dresses, we're here for the shake up. While there are two of you deciding the big things together (we're referring to the guest list and the surprisingly varied shades of 'white tablecloth’ available) there's one decision you're likely to make solo: the wedding dress.
As if your wedding planning wasn't difficult enough already, what was once a relatively small sartorial pond of options (unusual necklines were about as experimental as things got) has become a whole ocean of possibilities. Great for those of you with a strong idea of your own personal style - overwhelming for those hovering in the “not so sure” camp.
Even for the most indecisive, you've likely always known whether you'll opt for a voluminous wedding gown or something A-line and super sleek – in the same way you know whether you tend to prefer v-neck or polo neck tops, sequins and sparkle or something more pared back.
Something you may not have entirely decided on, though, is the sleeve. Strapless - or very thin spaghetti straps - have long been the go-to for brides, while cap sleeves, bell sleeves and sheer sleeves make for other chic options. But let us introduce you to the world of the long-sleeve dress. No longer a staple at stuffy, more formal weddings, long sleeve gowns are a new way for brides to put an unexpected - often very fashion-forward - spin on things.
Over the last few years, the demand for wedding dresses with sleeves has soared, quickly replacing the trend for shoulder-baring strapless gowns. We'd be lying if we said we weren't into it.
Eleven years ago, when Kate Middleton said “I do” to Prince William on her wedding day, she wore an ivory and white satin dress featuring long sleeves and a bodice covered in lace by Alexander McQueen creative director Sarah Burton. Kate was supposedly inspired by Grace Kelly’s wedding dress; the silk taffeta and antique Brussels lace gown made by MGM costume designer Helen Rose (it’s since become one of the most iconic wedding dresses of all time.
Since then, celebrities have caught the long-sleeved wedding dress bug. From Hailey Baldwin's floor-length gown with lace sleeves designed by Virgil Abloh for Off-White to Miranda Kerr's stunning Haute Couture Dior satin gown with button sleeves, it seems the rest of the world has quickly realised just how flattering and timeless a long sleeve wedding dress actually is.
With long sleeve wedding dresses looking like they're going nowhere, there are plenty of truly beautiful options to shop that will stand the test of time cut in crepe, chiffon, organza and lace. Whether you’re looking for playful puffed sleeve vibes, something sheer, a long sleeve lace wedding dress or something super embellished, these are the very best long sleeve wedding dresses whatever your budget.
