Ja Rule could learn a thing or two from fellow rapper Tyler, The Creator.
The latter hip-hop artist just successfully wrapped his sixth annual Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival with Goldenvoice. The festival ran from Oct. 28 to Oct. 29 at USC’s Exposition Park in Los Angeles.
In a lot filled with tweens, twenty-somethings, and parental guidance, fans who trekked to experience a day of headliners and carnival attractions appeared more than fulfilled. Celebrity attendees were also sprinkled among the crowd to see a list of acts that included singer-songwriter Lana Del Rey, R&B songstress Solange, punk rock stars Trash Talk, electronic music duo Justice, and rappers Mac Miller, 2 Chainz, and Kid Cudi.
“Black-ish” actress Yara Shahidi enjoyed the fest alongside her mom, while Jerrod Carmichael of “The Carmichael Show” roamed around the carnival grounds to see what exactly this year’s fest had to offer. Rapper and singer 6lack, who took the stage on Saturday, used the weekend that preceded Halloween as a way to hide in plain sight. He was spotted, however, wearing a banana costume a few hours after his performance.

And the event wouldn’t be complete without Tyler’s Odd Future clan. Syd couldn’t walk through the VIP area without shouts and the clamoring of cell phones from dear fans. Earl Sweatshirt, Hodgy, Left Brain, Domo Genesis, Mike G, and Taco were also available for OFWGKTA die-hards to see over the two days.

With an abundant supply of food trucks, free water, charging stations, and even TV screens to watch the Los Angeles Dodgers play in the World Series, the event appeared more than prepared for the massive crowds that poured in to see Tyler’s vision — from his Golf fashion label pop-up shop to his packed Saturday evening performance. Whatever Tyler was selling, fans were indeed buying.
One had to wait in line for at least 30 minutes if they wanted to buy merchandise — only to find that the majority of items were quickly sold out. “Yesterday alone, we sold more than we did the entire festival last year,” a vendor told Variety on Sunday. A new order of Camp Flog Gnaw garments will be reprinted and delivered to guests within three weeks.

But a group of eager teenagers chose to take matters into their own hands. They ripped away printed tarp that lined the fences around the grounds and wrapped up the Tyler-branded images to take home as a keepsake. While the act was considered to be “theft” by a nearby staffer, it was done with pure love for the event organizer.
A 14-year-old boy from Greensboro, N.C., flew in to celebrate his birthday early. With his father looking on from a distance, the Tyler superfan quickly made friends in a mosh pit with another kid from Boston. That sort of rowdy concert behavior was not only popular, but encouraged as Kelis and Migos demanded their audiences have a dance party. “How many people can we get to crowd-surf?” Lil Yachty asked Sunday night before he counted 15 fans floating through the crowd.
The common thread throughout the festival’s weekend remains its amicable environment. All of Tyler’s affiliates ended their sets by thanking him at the event. “This is like my first and only show the whole year. I didn’t do no [solo] shows; I toured with the A$AP Mob,” A$AP Rocky explained while addressing his friend, Tyler, on stage.
“I look forward to this every year,” he stated at the end of his set. “Everybody’s family in the building.”
