Bollywood helmer-actor Vijay “Goldie” Anand died Monday at Mumbai’s Leelavati Hospital after suffering a massive cardiac arrest the previous day. He was 71.

He made such Bollywood hits as “Guide,” “Jewel Thief” and “Teezri Manzil” (Three-story Mansion), many starring his older brother, Dev.

Vijay Anand began his career in 1957 with suspenser “Nau do gyarah” (Nine Plus Two Makes Eleven) and helmed a number of other pics such as “Kala bazaar” (Black Market), “Tere ghar ke samne” (In Front of Your Home), “Kahin aur chal” (Let’s Go Elsewhere), “Johny mera naam” (My Name Is Johny) and “Tere mere sapne” (Our Dreams).

Pics produced under his own shingle of Navketan Prods. had the trademark Bollywood style of catchy songs with some suspense and drama. His last film was 1988’s “Main tere liya” (I Am Yours).

He starred in several of the movies he directed and also those helmed by others such as “Kora kagaz” (Blank Paper) and 1994 TV series “Tahqiqat.”

He also served as chairman of the Film Certification Board of India but ankled in 2002.

Besides his brother, he is survived by his wife; a son, Dev; and his nephew, director Shekhar Kapur (“Elizabeth”).
